Quantity vs Durational Enhancement of Tone in the Maastricht Vowel System

چکیده

Duration measurements of long and short high vowels in the Limburgish dialect of Maastricht show that these vowels have a relatively contextfree durational difference compared to the durational difference found between members of tonal minimal pairs in the dialect. The latter have a substantial duration difference in intonation-phrase final position, but a much reduced difference in phrase-internal positions. These data support the position that the high vowels contrast for quantity, not for tone.

Is Hungarian Losing the Vowel Quantity Distinction?

The Hungarian vowel system is traditionally regarded as quantity-based. In such languages, length is primarily realised as a durational difference with little or no distinction in vowel quality. In this paper, we argue that the various types of interrelationship between quantity and quality have an impact on the target configuration of short and long vowels, and that quantity distinction is not...

Duration and pitch in the vowel quantity distinction of Yakut: Evidence from spontaneous speech

This paper investigates instrumentally for the first time the binary vowel quantity opposition (short vs. long) in Yakut (or Sakha) on the basis of spontaneous production data from nine speakers. Furthermore, f0 maxima and f0 slope showed effects of both quan...

Production of estonian quantity contrasts by native speakers of Finnish

Estonian and Finnish are closely related languages both exploiting duration cues contrastively; however, the quantity systems in the two languages are different. The Estonian quantity system involves three contrastive patterns referred to as short (Q1), long (Q2) and overlong (Q3) quantity degrees. These contrasts are manifested by a complex interaction of durational and tonal cues in a disylla...

Swedish quantity: Central Standard Swedish and Fenno-Swedish
